It’s been over 2 years since I’ve started my fitness journey with P90x. I’ve had a few setbacks along the way , but for the most part, I’ve been able to maintain my initial results.
The key to my success is mostly due to my healthy eating choices. I am no longer on a diet, and have taken the natural next step beyond the Beachbody Nutrition Plans. Right now, I am at a point where I’ve integrated my approach to eating into a true lifestyle change. Let’s face it, I’ll be 44 years old in a couple of months and am not getting any younger. Approaching clean eating from a long term perspective is the only real option for me. As for you, the earlier you start, the better you’ll end up down the road. I’m making it sound like this has been a huge sacrifice, but trust me, once I developed the following 3 rules, clean eating has been fairly simple to stick to.
Rule#1 – Variety. Always experiment and try new things. In addition to running the risk of not getting the full range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, eating the same thing over and over can get down right boring very fast. Occasionally, I’ll slip and fall into a rut due to a busy schedule, stress, etc. and whenever this happens, I open myself up to temptations and cravings (yep, they really never go away, lol). To avoid this, I make it a point to always be on the lookout for my next new dish, fruit, veggie, oil, seasoning, etc. Be willing to put in a little work by searching online, subscribing to a healthy magazine, talking with like minded friends, or looking up the recipe section of your free Team Beachbody account. There’s tons of discoveries just waiting to be found by you!
Rule #2 – Do not force yourself to eat Bad Tasting Food. I don’t care if it contains every nutrient known to man, if it’s nasty, Coach Eric is not eating it… period. That sounds pretty bold, right? Well, we can easily afford to make this statement because the numbers are in our favor. For every one bad tasting food out there, you’ll find countless alternatives that will provide you with comparable nutritional value. Again, clean eating is not about deprivation, it’s about opening yourself up to a limitless variety of healthy AND delicious food!
Rule #3 – Moderation is Everything. Is it ok to splurge? In my experience, if you ask 20 people this question, you are going to get 20 different answers. Here’s my two cents… Heck, while I pretty much stuck to my nutrition guides during my first couple rounds, I eased up a bit once I hit my target range for body fat and weight. Right now, I’ll eat a nice juicy burger or pizza every once and a while. That being said, “YOU” have to set the boundaries for yourself. Some people have cheat meals, some have cheat days, and some never cheat at all. The bottom line is that you’ll need to experiment with various approaches and see what works best for you. That being said, if you are just starting out in your fitness journey, I’d stick with the beachbody nutrition plan that came with your particular fitness program for the first round. It’s all about establishing good habits and getting off to a strong start as early in your fitness journey. A strong start will help build momentum so that everything will come to you a little easier as you progress.
Bonus Rule – Shakeology. For me, this is a no brainer. I’ve been taking this SuperFood meal replacement for close to two years and it’s served me in two main ways. Firstly, TIME. Preparing 5-6 healthy meals takes a lot of time. Shakeology has been my Ace in the hole on more than one occasion, as it’s easy to prepare and within minutes I’m done. So those mornings when I’m running late, or those evenings when I’m too tired to cook, instead of grabbing something “Convenient” and more than likely unhealthy, I’ve got Shakeology. Secondly, it contains chia seeds which help reduce cravings and keep me fuller longer. It also is packed with super foods, so it helps to fill in any of the vitamins, minerals, or antioxidants that I may have missed that day. The reason why this is so important is that it keeps my body running at 100%. When my body is at 100%, it can totally devote it’s energy and resources to responding to my fitness regimen — That means, more lean muscle, increased aerobic capacity, increased agility, endurance, etc… Again, Shakeology is a no brainer for me.
I hope this has been helpful for you. If you have any questions, I’m always here to help. Best of luck in your Fitness Journey!
